HI THERE

Thank you for stopping by and taking a look around my digital space! My name is Megan. I am an occasional teacher (OT) in Ottawa. I graduated from the University of Ottawa's Bachelor of Education program. I am Primary/Junior qualified. My undergraduate career was a journey where I was able to explore and discover my true interests and academic passions. I received a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology from Carleton University.

I was born and raised in Canada but I proudly come from a big Portuguese family. Experiencing traditions from both cultures has allowed me to see first-hand the significance of individual and group differences; especially how important this is in a classroom and school community. Who I am is a combination of Portuguese and Canadian customs, and I believe that this has enabled me to form deep and authentic connections with every student that I have worked with, whether it be in my practicum or volunteer experiences.

Ever since my first day of school I knew that I wanted to become a teacher. Mrs. K was my kindergarten teacher, and my inspiration to become a teacher when I grew up. I learned later on that my first year in school was Mrs. K's first year of teaching. Through all of the challenges a first year teacher might go through, Mrs. K found a way to leave me inspired and excited, on my very first day of school no less! She was incredibly understanding of the shy student that I was. I remember her creativity and engaging activities; our classroom post office was always full of letters. Her classroom promoted community, kindness, and fun. I remember feeling special and respected in her classroom. Her personality and dedication to students is what inspired me to become a teacher myself.

This illustration was created by my extremely talented brother. It was used for my undergraduate honours project!

In grade 5 I was a student in Mrs. L's classroom. Her compassion is what I remember the most. After losing a family member, she understood how this loss affected my home and school life. Still a shy student, I remember feeling comfortable enough to tell her whenever I was feeling sad. She taught me a breathing technique that I still remember and use to this day. Her incredibly heartwarming actions and welcoming personality reaffirmed my dream of becoming a teacher.

In high school I was fortunate to be a student of Ms. C. and Mr. L. Ms. C taught me Shakespeare, essay writing, and how to be true to who you are. She displayed unimaginable kindness to each and every one of her (teenaged) students. She understood that I was a shy but hard worker, and always encouraged my ideas. She showed me that, during those uncertain teenage years, nothing is more important that to be proud of yourself.

Mr. L. was my history teacher. He taught me about World Wars, Canadian history, and the importance of humour. He incorporated his interests into classroom discussions and found a way to tie them into curriculum content; forming real-world connections with his students. His openness encouraged and inspired me to apply my creativity and imagination into history assignments. He showed me how humour can revolutionize a classroom atmosphere.
